iCall Free VoIP – iPhone App Review

iCall Free VoIP (Free) Version – 1.2.5 REVIEW – “Bad reception at home?  iCall to the rescue!” One of the things that I had to compromise a while back when I got my first iPhone was my cell phone service.  Now don’t get me wrong, AT&T has very fast 3G service, and I don’t have any more problems in most areas with reception than I did with my previous carrier.  The problem is that my house seems to be a dead zone!  Since I don’t have a home phone this made it difficult for people to get ahold of sometimes.  That is until I started using iCall Free VoIP! I’ve tried a variety of different VoIP calling services in the past, but most of them are either difficult to set up or didn’t offer some of the features that I wanted to have like an incoming call number.  The greatest feature of this app in my opinion is in the ease of use factor which was definitely refreshing! When you open iCall for the first time you will need to set up what kind of plan you’ll be using.  If all you want to do is be able to make phone calls one of the options is completely free!  The setup for this kind of account consists of making a phone call to a number to confirm what your cell phone number is.  Once you’ve done that all you have to do is dial any number to call out over WiFi or the cell network.  The great thing is that you can start a call at home on WiFi and then continue it when you leave the house on 3G or EDGE! But what if you’re like me and you need people to be able to get ahold of you at home as well as be able to call out over WiFi?  Well for just $10 a month you can get unlimited outgoing and incoming calls to your own private number!  There are a variety of area codes to select numbers from, although I was disappointed to see that there were not any local numbers to my area.  With that said, there are a variety of area codes available and they are constantly adding more! Now I’m sure you’re probably wondering how you can receive calls with no cell connection.  Well as long as your home WiFi is set up properly you will receive a push notification over WiFi that will let you know when you have an incoming call!  When you receive the message all you have to do is touch answer to open up iCall and answer the call immediately! One of the most important things with a service like this is always going to be call quality.  I was very pleased with the quality of calls using my 3GS phone.  I made and received several calls to both local and long-distance numbers and didn’t seem to have any problems.  With that said, my wife seemed to have problems with choppy audio on her iPhone 3G.  It didn’t happen all the time though so it’s possible that it had more to due to some of the memory problems that the 3G has. This app also offers a decent array of features that you would expect.  It allows you to use your iPhone contacts list from directly within the app, it shows you a list of calls that you’ve made recently and it also offers a voice mail box that is particularly useful if you decide to pay for a personal incoming number

Packing Pro – iPhone App Review

Packing Pro ($2.99) Version – 4.0 REVIEW – “The ultimate tool for regular travelers!” If you travel on a regular basis you’ve probably left things behind on more than one occasion.  If that’s the case you might be interested in Packing Pro by Quinn Genzel.  Packing Pro and its slightly less functional Packing is an app that keeps a database of common items that people take on trips.  Not only will it keep track of things that you need to bring but also a list of things that you need to do before you leave on your trip! I’ll have to admit I was definitely skeptical of the idea of an app that’s main purpose is to make a list of things to have ready and/or pack for your trip.  I was definitely surprised at just how useful it really is.  The best thing is that it comes with a rather large database of common travel items built in already. When the app opens up you’ll be taken to the “Packing” screen.  At the bottom of the screen is a menu that allows you to quickly access the “Catalog,” “Design” and “Help” pages.  When you are ready to create a list all you have to do is touch the “Create New List” button.  Once you touch that button you’ll be given several different options.  You can create a list totally from scratch using items that are in the apps “Catalog,” you can use a previously created list to create a new one, you can use one of several pre-set lists or you can get “Expert Help” to create a customized list based on how many people you are travelling with, how long the trip is, weather conditions and several other variables.

TweetDeck for iPhone – iPhone App Review

TweetDeck (Free) Version – 1.3 REVIEW – “A great twitter client that syncs with your desktop!” There are so many apps that interface with Twitter that it can be a little daunting trying to find the “diamonds in the rough.”  While many people swear by some of the more popular paid apps like Tweetie 2 and Twittelator Pro a lot of people use twitter but would rather not pay for a app that is basically just for updating your status.  TweetDeck for iPhone and iPod Touch combines the power of a great Twitter client with a look and feel that is similar to their also free TweetDeck client for desktop computers! When you open up TweetDeck you’ll first need to set up all your accounts.  If you have previously set up the desktop client and you decided to set up a TweetDeck user account all you’ll have to do is log into that account and it will set up all your “Columns” automatically.  If you haven’t already set it up though “Columns” are the way that TweetDeck is organized.  You can have as many of them as you want and they will who you things like all of your “Friends” messages, all of your direct messages.  You can even set up columns to show results from Twitter searches.

Twittelator Pro – iPhone App Review

Twittelator Pro($4.99) Version – 3.6 REVIEW – “This twitter client has all the tools you need to stay in touch!” In the world of twitter there are countless ways to send and receive messages and to find information that you’re looking for.  Some of them keep things very simple, and some of them try to incorporate everything.  Twittelator Pro definitely falls into the “comprehensive” twitter clients category, while at the same time managing to deliver a decent user experience! An important footnote that I’ll list here is that this app comes in two flavors, “Twittellator Pro” and “Twittelator.”  While there are a few small differences in their features, the main difference between the two is that “Twittelator” is supported by ads while the pro version is not.  There are also a few extra advanced features such as being able to access multiple accounts and tighter integration between your other social networking sites. The app loads up very quickly and brings you to your “Friends” menu when you start it up.  This screen will show all of your friend’s recent “tweets.”  At the bottom of the screen you’ll see several other menu options ranging from a page showing tweets that your twitter account(s) are mentioned, to a page for you messages and a general settings page

Magellan Premium Car Kit – Review

Magellan Premium Car Kit ($129.99) REVIEW – “Take your mobile device to the next level with Magellan’s GPS Kit!” I have heard so much about GPS kits like this one on both sides.  Some people say that it’s ridiculous to pay that much because you could by a standalone unit cheaper, while others say that they add so much more than just a GPS chip to the experience.  Thanks to the folks at Magellan I was able to get my hands on one!  I did my best to run it through the fire and see how it performs at various tasks.  At the bottom of this review you’ll also see a YouTube video where I’ve posted an unboxing and field test of the dock! First off I’d like to say that I am very impressed with the build quality of the dock.  Of course you would expect nothing less when you’re shelling out $130, but no part of the unit or accessories felt fragile.  The initial setup of the device is very simple.  Once you’ve got everything plugged in and the dock attached where you want it there is a small black button the back of the device that will make it “search” for other devices.  All you have to do then is just connect to it via Bluetooth.  This only has to be done one time as your device will remember the dock later and automatically connect as long as you have your Bluetooth on. One of the things that I was quite interested in is how well the speakerphone would perform.  I typically have a busy schedule and sometimes it requires me to be getting in touch with people while I amalready on my way there.  If I’m going to be safe it is important that I keep my hands free and eyes on the road.  The speakerphone function seemed to work quite well.  I’m not exactly sure if the dock has some kind of noise cancelling feature or what, but I had no problem with people being able to hear me and the dock’s built in speaker amplified the other party’s voice enough to make it easy to carry on a conversation.

Barcode Reader – iPhone App Review

Barcode Reader (Free) Version –  1.0 REVIEW – “The fast and free way to save money!” There have been many apps that have claimed to have the ability to read barcodes, and very few that have actually been able to do it effectively, especially for free.  Until recently I had only really used one or two apps that have been able to scan barcodes with any accuracy.  While Barcode Reader by SHAPE Services has just come out, I am very impressed with what it has to offer in its initial release! The look and feel of Barcode Reader is good.  The main men u screen is what looks like a barcode above several menu items.  Your options are to scan a barcode, view a “Product List,” or find out more “About” the app.  Touching the “About” button will take you to another menu screen with several options such as a FAQ area, Support, and information on other products developed by SHAPE Services! But since this app is designed to scan barcodes you will probably want to just get right to it.  The app opens quite quickly and once you touch the “Scan Barcode” button you will be taken to what looks a lot like the camera app, except there is no button to take a picture.  From here all you have to do is line up the barcode you want to scan in the middle of the screen.  Once you do the barcode will scan and then you will be shown a list of possible matches for that barcode number based on a search of the internet If you have difficulty scanning the barcode that you are interested you might want to know that you  don’t actually want to have the barcode take up too much of the screen.  You actually want a small margin on the left and right side around the code.  Unfortunately one of the things that is missing in this app is some sort of “guide” on the scanning screen to let you know when you are lined up properly.  Once I got the hang of it though, it is one of the most accurate scanning engines that I have used on a paid or unpaid app! While the barcode scanner itself is extremely accurate, unfortunately I cannot say the same for the internet barcode search.  This is something that I am sure will improve with time but is definitely the main weakness of this app at the current time.  While sometimes a barcode will turn up items and prices from several different websites using a barcode serach, there were several times that searches brought up a totally unrelated item for some reason.
