Spanish Armada – iPhone App Review

Spanish Armada ($1.99) Version –1.1 REVIEW – “A great old classic brought to life!” I remember when I was little playing battleship with my brothers and sisters.  The game has been a classic board game for decades.  It was even more exciting when they released electronic games that had sound effects and  that kept track of hits and misses!  Well today I’m happy to be giving away a promo code for a battleship-like game called Spanish Armada by Orient Maple!  So stick around for the end of this review where I’ll be giving you information on how you can enter to win! If you’ve never played a game like this before the basic concept is that each player hides 5 ships somewhere on their grid?  Once both players have hidden all their ships you then take turns selecting squares on your opponents grid to attack!  This game breaks up the action with a couple of different ways to play as well. In the options menu you’ll find the option to select “Volley Shot” or “Salvo Shot” mode.  In volley shot you take turns shooting until you miss.  What this means is if you strike on of your opponents ships then you get to go again until you miss!  While on the other hand, salvo shot gives each player the same amount of shots that they have ships left.

iFallinLove – iPhone App Review

iFallinLove ($0.99) Version – 1.1 REVIEW – “A cute diversion for Valentines Day!” Do you find yourself always wondering where your significant other is while you are away from them?  Or maybe you have a certain place that you love like no other that you think about a lot.  With iFallinLove you can now keep track of how far you are away from a person or a place and if you have have an iPhone 3GS you can even know what direction their location is in. On the surface this is a gimmicky, cheesy app, but at the same time it is only $0.99.  For some it will be worth, and for others it won’t.  When you open this app up you will see a blue heart in the center of the screen.  In order to track or “fall in love” with a location all you have to do is touch the heart.  Once you are “in love” with a location the further away from that place you get the smaller the red heart will get.

Ghosts’n Zombies – iPhone App Review

Ghosts’n Zombies ($0.99) Version – 1.0 REVIEW – “Enjoy non-stop action with this creative side-scrolling shooter!” So the weekend is here and you’re scanning through the App Store looking for a good app to kill some time?  Well look no further because Ghosts ‘n Zombies has a creative concept, fun story, easy to use controls and is connected to a great social network so you can see how your scores match up with the rest of the world! When you open up the app you’re immediately immersed in the fun cartoony style of the game with a great opening movie.  While I was not thrilled to see that there were ads in the menu of this game that is already a paid game, they are only in the menu and so it was bearable.  There are three options from the main menu: “Play,” “Options,” and “Open Feint.” The first time you open the game you will be asked to either sign up for Open Feint or if you want to connect with your device’s account.  While it is not required, signing up for Open Feint will allow you to track achievements and scores and compare them with your friends!  The achievements add a console-like feel to this game that makes it a lot of fun to play even if you don’t necessarily want to compare your scores to other people! The options menu offers a few basic settings like sound effects and music volume as well as the option to set the sensitivity of the accelerometer.  Once you are ready to start your game the basic idea is that you are an old man that is bent on taking out all of the various ghosts, zombies and other “spooky” characters.  You control him by tilting your device side to side to move him and by touching the screen in the direction that you want to fire your gun.  For every so many enemies you kill you will gain the ability to use upgraded weapons and also gain ammo for your main gun. There are two different types to play Ghosts ‘n Zombies: “Story Mode,” and “Survival Mode.”  In story mode there are brief cut scenes as you make it through the levels and each level has a certain amount of enemies every time.  By contrast survival mode levels only end when you die, and your score is determined by how many enemies you last through! What really makes or breaks a game like this is going to be how easy it is to control.  In that department I am happy to say this game is amazing!  The controls work in such a way that you are not really even thinking about how to make your next move but about what that next move will be!  This is made even better with the added ability to set the accelerometer sensitivity.

RandomPlay – iPhone App Review

RandomPlay ($0.99) Version – 1.0 REVIEW – “Discover music you didn’t know you had with this app!” If you’re like me you’ve probably accumulated a lot of music over the years.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fun tool to navigate through it and discover music that you haven’t listened to in a long time?  Well thanks to Chilli X and their new iPhone app RandomPlay, doing just this has never been easier! When you open RandomPlay you will see 12 different album covers and the first random song that was selected will start playing.  To find out what songs the app has randomly selected all you have to do is touch and hold on one of the album covers.  A little box pops up that tells you the name of the artist and the name of the song. Switching between songs is as easy as touching the cover of the song you wish to listen to.  You can also pause by touching the song you are currently listening to.  Once you are either tired of the current set of 12 songs or you have listened to them all you can get a new list of songs by shaking your device.  This makes it easy to browse through a lot of random songs very quickly! If you would like to create a list of 12 songs that you are interested in the best way to do that is to double tap tracks to replace them with new ones.  This will allow you to create a custom list of 12 tracks that you are interested in.  I’ll have to admit that I was a little bit skeptical of this app, but the more I played with it the more I appreciated the visual nature of this app.  It really does help you to rediscover your own music library! For a first release this app is very solid, but as with any new app there is room for improvement.  I found myself missing all of the playback controls of the iPod app such as volume control and seek.  While you still have the volume buttons on the side of your device it would have been nice to see features like these implemented within the app either through gestures such as swiping and/or a separate “controls” screen.

FourSquare – iPhone App Review

FourSquare (Free) Version 1.5.1 REVIEW – “Compete with your friends by earning points for discovering your own hometown!” FourSquare is a great app because it encourages you to get out there and really explore your hometown. Every place you visit gets you points and for places that you visit frequently you might just get declared Mayor, unless of course someone else starts going there more often. When you first open the app you will have to sign up for a foursquare account.

3D Bookshelf – iPhone App Review

3D Bookshelf ($0.99) Version – 1.0.0 REVIEW – “Bring the full book experience to your iPhone!” There is just something about reading books on an electronic device that is not quite the same.  It may be the same information and it may even be in a very similar format but it still just doesn’t seem right to many people.  If you’ve felt this way about eBooks then the 3D Bookshelf app for iPhone and iPod Touch may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for! My first impression of this app is that the visuals are outstanding.  What impressed me the most though is how easy it is to use!  When you open up the app you will be taken to a bookshelf full of books that you can flip through using a “coverflow-like” interface.  Each book has some basic information on its cover and there is more detailed information about the book in the little text box below.

Chore Hero ($2.99) Version 1.2 REVIEW – “Keep track of the entire family’s chores to see who become Chore Hero!” This is a great app for families because it allows you to assign chores for every member of the family and then give out points when they perform a chore. The point of Chore Hero is to see who is doing all of their chores and to allow family members to rack up points for a reward. Anyone running a busy household knows that it can be hard to make sure that not only does everyone do their chores but those that do them well and on time get rewarded

Mad Libs – iPhone App Review

Mad Libs (Free) Version – 1.2 REVIEW – “Take a great party game with you on the road!” I was so excited when I saw this game in the App Store, and especially excited that there was a free version to try out as well!  If you’ve never played Mad Libs then you’re definitely missing out because this is one of the most fun games you will ever play in a large group of people.  The basic idea of the game is that you have to choose words to fill in the blanks of a story and the results are often quite hilarious. The graphics are cheesy and there are not really any sound effects or music to speak of.  The developers did do a good job of making this app feel silly, which if you are familiar with Mad Libs is very fitting.  When you start Mad Libs you’ll be taken to the main menu where you will need to select a booklet of Mad Libs to use.  This free version of the game comes with a few free ones, and there is the option to buy a bunch more for $3.99 through in-app purchase. Once you select a booklet you’ll see a list of titles of different stories to select one from.  Once you select a story you have will have to go through and pick words for all of the blanks.  You do this by reading the type of word underneath the blank such as “noun,” “verb,” or one of several other types and making sure that you put a word of that type.  When you read the story at the end you’ll see why
