Headset – iPhone App Review

Headset ($0.99) Version – 1.0 REVIEW – “Turn your iPhone into a wireless headset!” Of all the apps I’ve reviewed recently, this one has to be one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen!  Headset, by SHAPE Services, is an app that will allow you to use your iPhone as a wireless headset or headphones.  All you need for it to work is a simple free desktop client and this app!  This is particularly useful for things like VOIP calling, but it has a lot of other uses as well. When you open up Headset the first thing you see is the main menu.  The center of the screen is an image of headphones with a meter on each side of it to show how much signal the app is receiving from your computer.  Setting up a new computer is very easy.  All you have to do is touch the settings button on the right side above the headset and you’ll see a list all of the computers that are running the free server software and are on the same WiFi network.  All you have to do to connect to one of them is just touch it.

RandomPlay – iPhone App Review

RandomPlay ($0.99) Version – 1.0 REVIEW – “Discover music you didn’t know you had with this app!” If you’re like me you’ve probably accumulated a lot of music over the years.  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fun tool to navigate through it and discover music that you haven’t listened to in a long time?  Well thanks to Chilli X and their new iPhone app RandomPlay, doing just this has never been easier! When you open RandomPlay you will see 12 different album covers and the first random song that was selected will start playing.  To find out what songs the app has randomly selected all you have to do is touch and hold on one of the album covers.  A little box pops up that tells you the name of the artist and the name of the song. Switching between songs is as easy as touching the cover of the song you wish to listen to.  You can also pause by touching the song you are currently listening to.  Once you are either tired of the current set of 12 songs or you have listened to them all you can get a new list of songs by shaking your device.  This makes it easy to browse through a lot of random songs very quickly! If you would like to create a list of 12 songs that you are interested in the best way to do that is to double tap tracks to replace them with new ones.  This will allow you to create a custom list of 12 tracks that you are interested in.  I’ll have to admit that I was a little bit skeptical of this app, but the more I played with it the more I appreciated the visual nature of this app.  It really does help you to rediscover your own music library! For a first release this app is very solid, but as with any new app there is room for improvement.  I found myself missing all of the playback controls of the iPod app such as volume control and seek.  While you still have the volume buttons on the side of your device it would have been nice to see features like these implemented within the app either through gestures such as swiping and/or a separate “controls” screen.

FourSquare – iPhone App Review

FourSquare (Free) Version 1.5.1 REVIEW – “Compete with your friends by earning points for discovering your own hometown!” FourSquare is a great app because it encourages you to get out there and really explore your hometown. Every place you visit gets you points and for places that you visit frequently you might just get declared Mayor, unless of course someone else starts going there more often. When you first open the app you will have to sign up for a foursquare account.

Magellan Premium Car Kit – Review

Magellan Premium Car Kit ($129.99) REVIEW – “Take your mobile device to the next level with Magellan’s GPS Kit!” I have heard so much about GPS kits like this one on both sides.  Some people say that it’s ridiculous to pay that much because you could by a standalone unit cheaper, while others say that they add so much more than just a GPS chip to the experience.  Thanks to the folks at Magellan I was able to get my hands on one!  I did my best to run it through the fire and see how it performs at various tasks.  At the bottom of this review you’ll also see a YouTube video where I’ve posted an unboxing and field test of the dock! First off I’d like to say that I am very impressed with the build quality of the dock.  Of course you would expect nothing less when you’re shelling out $130, but no part of the unit or accessories felt fragile.  The initial setup of the device is very simple.  Once you’ve got everything plugged in and the dock attached where you want it there is a small black button the back of the device that will make it “search” for other devices.  All you have to do then is just connect to it via Bluetooth.  This only has to be done one time as your device will remember the dock later and automatically connect as long as you have your Bluetooth on. One of the things that I was quite interested in is how well the speakerphone would perform.  I typically have a busy schedule and sometimes it requires me to be getting in touch with people while I amalready on my way there.  If I’m going to be safe it is important that I keep my hands free and eyes on the road.  The speakerphone function seemed to work quite well.  I’m not exactly sure if the dock has some kind of noise cancelling feature or what, but I had no problem with people being able to hear me and the dock’s built in speaker amplified the other party’s voice enough to make it easy to carry on a conversation.

Eliss – iPhone App Review

Eliss ($2.99) Version 1.1 REVIEW – “If you have not played Eliss, you have not experienced the true potential of the iPhone” If we are being honest just about every game on the iPhone is either a tweaked version of games we’ve seen before or simply old games on a new console, but I can honestly say I have never EVER played or seen a game quite like this one. Get ready for Eliss because well it’s just cool to play a game this revolutionary, and the game is just plain fun. Alright when you play this game it might seem a bit confusing, it might even seem confusing after you go through tutorial, but whatever you do, do NOT let that keep you from trying out this game
