ArtStudio – iPhone App Review
ArtStudio ($3.99) Version – 1.1 REVIEW – “An app that will wet the appetite of any budding artist!” I have downloaded many “paint-like” apps in the past. Some of them have been pretty fun, but very few if any have managed to be easy enough to use for actual artwork. ArtStudio is an app that not only is easy to use, but has a depth that will satisfy the appetite of even the most particular artists! Some of the artwork that has already been created with this app is quite remarkable, and at the same time the interface itself is simple enough for children to use! When you open the app the first thing you’ll see is a quick overview of what you’ll find in the app. This screen only shows up the first time you open the app and once you get past it you’ll be presented with a blank canvas! The interface is amazingly intuitive. If you touch in the upper left corner the app will perform an “undo” and if you touch the upper right corner it will “redo.” If the menu bar is hidden touching the arrow in the lower right corner will open the menu back up on the bottom of the screen. The menu itself is extremely simple. There are 7 different options that include everything from different “brush” styles to image effects and even a “lesson” area where you can actually learn to draw through an interactive tutorial! The truly great thing is that while it is easy to touch these menu buttons and access your different “brushes,” colors and even “layers” if you touch and hold on any of those buttons it will bring up an advanced menu with all kinds of customizations! I never thought I’d see the day that I was using my iPhone to create and manage “layers” and even create transparency! The brush customization is equally amazing. It not only allows you to control the size of your brush strokes, but the type, shape, fade in and out and even the opacity of them! Also included in this menu is an easy to use “smudge” brush to blend colors together! With the depth of tools available in this app wouldn’t it be great to be able to touch up your photos without transferring them to your desktop? Well you can because this app includes quick and easy import and export features. You can even send out pictures directly via email if you like! Even if you’re not an amazing artist, it’s easy to improve your photos with the built in effects such as “Blur,” “Sharpen,” “Black White,” and even “Emboss”! With all the great features and the smooth integration of this app it really is hard to find downfalls. One thing I did notice though is that there is no way I can see of drawing with shapes like in a lot of other paint programs. If you want to draw a circle, or a rectangle you’re just on your own with this app. With that said, most serious artists probably would not use those tools very much anyway. More likely they would be using the more advanced brush strokes and the blur capability to shape their drawings All things considered this app is probably the best art/photo related app that I have used on my iPhone. The developer has done an excellent job of adding lots of in depth features and customization, while at the same time still making it simple enough for anyone to use. Whether you are a serious student of art, or you just want a good tool to touch up your photos with, I would highly recommend ArtStudio. So what are you waiting for? Grab it for just $3.99 in the App Store today! - David H

Full StoryGorillacam – iPhone App Review
Gorillacam (Free) Version – 1.1 REVIEW – “Add some extra functions to your iPhone’s camera with this free app!” There have been a lot of cheap camera apps released in the $1-5 range that can add a lot of functionality that Apple’s default camera app just doesn’t have. With that said, Gorillacam has a lot of the features that you’ll see in those paid apps and it’s free! While obviously this is a marketing plow to get publicity for their “Gorillapod” camera stands they’re not hurting my feelings be giving away this extremely useful iPhone app! When you open Gorillacam you’ll see an interface similar to the default iPhone camera app just with different buttons available. On the left side of the screen there is a slider that controls the digital zoom. Obviously since the iPhone does not have a zoom lens the zoom pretty much just crops the picture to the area that you want, but it is easy to use and is better than not having the option for zoom. In the bottom left corner there is a button with all of the specific settings that are available in this app. There are toggle switches for all kinds of features to help you take better pictures and also to automate taking pictures. At the very bottom there is a “Settings” button that will open up a screen with a few basic options. You can set the image size for when you save them to your phone and even set a different size for when you choose to email photos! You can also turn the digital zoom slider on or off and/or move its location on the screen. So what features does this app add to your camera? Well for starters it has a “Self-timer.” What this means is that you can set a delay after you touch the button for the app to take a picture. This makes it possible to take group pictures without a cameraman! A couple of other great feature of this app are the “Anti-shake,” and “Bubble Level.” These two options will help you keep your pictures from blurring due to motion and also help you make sure you’re pictures are level
Full StoryiTranslate Plus – iPhone App Review
iTranslate Plus($0.99) Version – 3.3 REVIEW – “A great tool for quick translation!” There have been a lot of free and paid translator apps released in the App Store, but unfortunately most of the best ones are quite expensive. Well thanks to iTranslate Plus you can have the benefit of translation between over 50 languages for just $0.99! If you’d like to know how to pronounce the translations, you can also purchase “voices” through in-app purchasing for just $1.99 each! When you open iTranslate you’ll be taken directly to the translation screen. You’ll see two text boxes with a language above each of them that you can touch to select whatever language you want. On the left side in between the two text boxes is a button to swap the two languages to translate text back the other way. Once you’ve selected the languages that you want to translate to/from all you have to do is type some text in the text box at the top of the screen. Once you enter the text it will take a few seconds to translate and then show up in the box at the bottom of the screen. The translation itself seemed to be pretty fast, but it depends a lot on how good your internet connection is because the actual translation is done via the internet. There are a couple of features that are only available in the “Plus” version of this app. Whether they are worth $0.99 is up to you. The first is the ability to use landscape mode. Some people will find this feature more useful than others. I am actually fairly good at using the portrait keyboard on the iPhone and so it’s not all that helpful to me. The second added feature is a “favorite” list that allows you to keep a list and quickly switch between commonly used translations

Full StoryHeadset – iPhone App Review
Headset ($0.99) Version – 1.0 REVIEW – “Turn your iPhone into a wireless headset!” Of all the apps I’ve reviewed recently, this one has to be one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen! Headset, by SHAPE Services, is an app that will allow you to use your iPhone as a wireless headset or headphones. All you need for it to work is a simple free desktop client and this app! This is particularly useful for things like VOIP calling, but it has a lot of other uses as well. When you open up Headset the first thing you see is the main menu. The center of the screen is an image of headphones with a meter on each side of it to show how much signal the app is receiving from your computer. Setting up a new computer is very easy. All you have to do is touch the settings button on the right side above the headset and you’ll see a list all of the computers that are running the free server software and are on the same WiFi network. All you have to do to connect to one of them is just touch it.
Full StoryaddLib – iPhone App Review
addLib ($1.99) Version – 1.0.1 REVIEW – “Amazing photo design without hours at the computer!” This app, if nothing else, is at the very least one of the most interesting apps I have ever reviewed. The basic idea of addLib is that it will take any photo from your library, or one directly from the iPhone’s camera and place it inside a modern looking design. I’ll have to admit that I was definitely skeptical of this app, I mean how good can a computer do photo editing on its own? With that said this app was definitely a pleasant surprise! When you open up this app you are greeted with a blank screen and a menu bar at the bottom of the screen. At the top of the screen you’ll notice several small dots that look a lot like the dots below your device’s home screen. If you swipe left or right you will move between several different screens. The far left screen has a login for your twitter account that will allow you to post pictures directly via twitpic! The way the app works is extremely simple. All you have to do is choose your photo by touching the button in the lower left corner. You can either select a photo from your library or take a new picture with your camera. Once you have a photo selected the app will automatically create three photo layouts. You can either select one of these three layouts and save them or you can create more by touching the “create” button” in the middle.
